Sometimes you meet someone and you instantly connect with them in a very happy way ~ it was Totally like this when I spoke to Karen for the first time on the phone. She had left me a message earlier that day asking if I was available on her wedding date, and after speaking with her I hung up and was like, "OMG I soooo hope we work together!!!" (that evening I also gushed to my boyfriend how much I hoped that she would choose me, that's how much I hoped Lol!). She just had such a sweet, uplifting spirit to her, that even just chatting with her for that fairly brief time was so refreshing and wonderful.
Happily, my wish came true & we had the honor of photographing her wedding with her now-hubby Darius :D!
(She later told me that she also knew immediately, as soon as she hung up the phone, that she wanted to work with me too and told Darius right then and there that she had found their photographer - for me, it really doesn't get much better than this!! It made me super happy :). Sometimes you just know, you know?? XD)
Some people just radiate joy - Karen is one of those people.
Then while she was getting the finishing touches done on her makeup, her bridesmaids (who were awesome too btw) and the women in her family did something that was completely unexpected & moving: all of a sudden they all just burst into song, filling the room & serenading her like a queen, full of love, before giving her very meaningful gifts of something old, something new, something borrowed, & something blue.
It was clear to see how much they loved and cared for Karen. She was so moved. It actually took me completely off guard as well, and I ended up holding back some tears too ~ which I totally wiped away really quickly so I could continue shooting LOL!
And as her gift to them, Karen designed each of her bridesmaids a robe with a word or set of words on the back that told them how much they meant to her & how they had personally touched her life :) .
So cute, so pink, so awesome XD !!!
I had shot at the beautiful Bel Air Bay Club once before, & was super excited to shoot there again that day ~ both Karen & Darius really love all things green & growing, so I made sure to incorporate some mother nature into their details as well!
To First Look, or not to First Look?
Darius had originally been very opposed to having a "First Look", but after turning around and seeing Karen, he was totally sold & asked if we could do it all over again LOL XD!! Love it.
The wedding ceremony was really cool too! It was a combination of traditions from both the Christian and Jewish faiths ~ there was both a rabbi & a reverend (who both stood at the front at the same time & took turns speaking during the ceremony :) , a beautiful cross next to the elegant rose & orchid-covered chuppah, & much love and joy brought together on the hill by the sea!
The evening brought with it a beautiful reception upstairs in the ballroom, with of course plenty of touches of nature adorning the tables, cake, & even hanging from the ceiling!
Darius also had a dance with his other leading lady ~ his daughter : ) .
Karen has often said to me, "I love your spirit!!" And I must say, Karen & Darius, I so love yours too :D!
Thank you so much for allowing us to be a small part of your wonderful wedding. You two are truly blessed.
So many warm wishes & lots and lots of Aloha,
~ e :)
