She says because to her, I am a unicorn.
“Unicorn"?” I said.
I once told her, “Thank you so, so much for all of the amazing gifts! But please don’t worry about me, please spend the money to buy yourself something really nice!!”
I was then told:
”I can do whatever I want!”
Can’t argue with that LOL! Marlene is one tough lady.
I met Marlene because she asked me if I would teach her photography. I said, Yes! and we began her lessons. We talked about aperture and shutter speeds, composition and light, but also sometimes just sat and talked about life. Soon after she told me that although she really enjoyed learning about photo, she also just really liked having me around LOL! We became friends :).
One day, she told me, “You are a unicorn!” And from then on, whenever she saw a unicorn she got it for me lol! My husband and I have enjoyed many meals on our unicorn plates with our very colorful unicorn napkins. If I come to a meeting with a unicorn notebook, you now know why. She also says that she Never uses the unicorn emoji unless she is texting me - because that’s my emoji. LOL
My unicorns have been coming to me for 5 years now :).

Sometimes when we meet and Marlene is tired, I take Maddie for her walkies.
She is a very good doggie.
It turns out that Marlene wanted to learn photography so she could: find letters out in the world, take photos of them, and then use them to write people’s names! She often goes on walks for the sole purpose of finding letters, but she is also just always on the lookout wherever she goes in case a good one might appear. She has also found many letters in her own backyard!
The only rule is that the letters must happen naturally - so no cheating & setting things up XD Lol!!
We have made over 70 names so far! Yay!
She gives them to/makes them for: her family, friends, the nice nurse at the hospital, her neighbors, the mail carrier, the man at the store, everybody!
She wants to remind you that you are unique and special, and also just to spread more love in the world!
She often says to me, “You must think I’m crazy!”
I just tell her that she is in good company X).
But so far nobody has made her name - so I’m gonna to do it!

We haven’t seen each other since quarantine, which is a total bummer, but most important to keep her safe!
She misses my husband too.
She also gave him his own unicorn so we can match.

Marlene, I really think that You are the unicorn! She is such a character and one of the spunkiest, most resilient ladies I have ever met - I also love that I never know what is going to come out of her mouth LOL!
She has been through so much in her 85 years - good times and really hard times too. She has lived & traveled all around the world, and also believes that it is never “too late” to learn new things, begin anew, or go after your dreams. She has had a run of bad luck lately, but this still does not stop her from wanting to spread joy to others, & it is this desire to spread happiness fuels and moves her to create things of unique beauty.

Marlene got me this bag when she went to Germany! I really love it so my husband asked one of his coworkers who spoke German if this meant “unicorn” & they were very confused LOL - these seem to be some sort of made up words? Like if in English someone said, “super dooper flooper do!” or similar XD. With that being said, if anyone knows if this means anything please do lmk!
